What is the repairability index?

The repairability index is meant to show consumers, when buying electrical and electronic devices, whether and how well these can be repaired or maintained. A rating scale is used for this, giving products between 0 and 10 points. The higher the score, the more easily the product can be repaired.

The index was invented in France. Since 2021, stores have visibly displayed the label on relevant devices.

Goal of the repairability index:

  • build consumer awareness of a circular economy: repairing instead of throwing away
  • encourage manufacturers to develop sustainable & repairable products
  • extend product lifespan
  • save resources
  • reduce waste, especially e-waste
  • Using the index, prospective buyers get better support for their purchasing decisions and can make informed choices. Ideally, this encourages them to repair defective products instead of disposing of them or buying new ones.

The repairability index is determined based on five main criteria:

  1. Quality & availability of technical documentation that can be used for a repair.
  2. Ease of disassembly, to take the product apart and access the defective components.
  3. Availability of spare parts
  4. Cost of spare parts
  5. Availability of software updates, website help, hotline, etc.

The air-Q achieved an excellent score of 9.1 in the evaluation.

Repairability index: can the air-Q be repaired?
